Greg Sandora's tour American Destiny

Book Title: Jack Canon's American Destiny
Publication Date: March 4, 2013
Publisher: Itoh Press
Word and Page Count: 314 pages, 99994 words
Genre: Thriller / Suspense Adventure, Romantic Political Thriller
Erotic Content: PG-13

BLURB:
It’s the steamy summer of 2016 in Washington, D.C. just days before the Democratic National Convention. A long and painful recession has left ordinary Americans suffering, spawning the hottest Presidential Contest in history. Jack Canon, a man born into privilege, a witness to great social injustice is going to be President of the United States–no matter what! Desperate and corrupt, the leader of the free world orders a hit to slow him down. The plan backfires–the wrong people are dead–a manhunt points to the unthinkable–The President of the United States.

Rewind one year, Jack’s focus on redistribution of wealth and energy has made him powerful enemies. Once his friends, Rogue Billionaires, Oil Sheiks, the Mob, all want him gone. The current President wants him alive–thinking he can win against an unabridged liberal. A Universal Raw Nerve of wealth vs. poverty is exposed becoming a thrill ride as deep machinations of espionage, geo-politics and deception, even murder play out. Kind and charismatic, Jack’s just naughty enough to have you falling for him like one of his loving circle of loyal friends. Of course he’s flawed, a dedicated family man, faithful to one woman, but in love with two. Is it his fault his best friend is impossibly jaw dropping beautiful? Think the crime and passion of the Godfather meets the romance and innocence of Camelot. A story that could spark a movement, a book that can seed a revolution. A heart thumping climax so shocking you’ll pull the covers and draw the shades! One things for sure, through all the drama and suspense, you’ll be pulling for Jack!

Excerpt:

The only thing that gave me a worse vibe than these two was Gene’s taste in decorating. The
ceilings were about 30 feet high and three walls held books up to about the first 15 feet, after
which was a very large landing around three quarters of the room. The wall opposite the door
was made up of five floor-to-ceiling arched windows. The bottom six feet of each had colonial
muttons and were partially opened, allowing the outside winter cold to fight with the heat in the
room. On the landings above the bookshelves were housed various artifacts of torture.
Gene saw me noticing, “These are from the collection of King Henry,” he boasted.
There were guillotines and stretching racks and other devices all made of aged wood and black
iron. Some had big weathered chain links hanging from them and leather straps. There were
black iron turning wheels, the sight was gruesome.
Gene motioned to a large axe with a semicircular blade and an unusually long, thick handle.
“This is my prized piece of the entire collection – the axe used to behead Katherine, Henry’s
youngest bride.” Mounted next to the axe, on a polished cherry post, was a scrap of parchment.
Next to it, carved in gold lettering over black onyx, was inscribed an onlooker. The parchment
had faded to an almost illegible degree and was kept behind glass.
Gene said, “The onlooker’s account is sealed in helium, just like the Declaration of
Independence, to preserve it. I’ve had it authenticated by historians, expert in the period.” The words were transferred onto the stone.
The eerie account told of the misty morning when the helpless fair-haired teenager, a mere girl,
forced to lay under the weight of the wealth of England, was led to her death.
I read the inscribed: Queen Katherine emerged just before nine in the morning. A rain the night
before had turned the courtyard muddy to our ankles. The streets containing the foul smell of
chicken scratch and horse urine slurried into the mix. Gawkers’ pushed for position and strained
to see the delicate fawn-like Katherine as she walked barefoot, clothed only in a very plain and
simple linen dress. The exposed skin of her upper chest was so pale I could see the ghostly blue
vein patchwork just beneath. The last time I had seen the young queen she was amazing, the
most beautiful woman in all England.
Fancily dressed and bright, riding in an open coach smiling sweetly waving to her subjects, I
fancied the thought our eyes might have met for a second.
“Spill her blood!” A spectator called out. I thought, what cowards this mob, content to stand by
and watch. Greedily clinging to their own lives–any one of which could be wrenched from him in
a second.
This bitter gray morning, the little Queen made her way slowly up to the old worn wooden
steps, pausing briefly, turning sad doe eyes back to the crowd. A pitiful thin waif of a child so
helpless and demure, Katherine continued up the stairs carefully gripping the railing as if it were
her mothers hand, that somehow she might be swept away from all this.
Once upon the platform, facing the crowd full on, her tiny limbs were exposed and pale, a
simple dress hanging over her nearly shapeless frame. She wore no jewelry. Her one remaining
vanity, long hair, perfectly combed. The henchman placed her firmly against the block and with a
blank and helpless stare Katherine moved her beautiful locks to one side exposing her slender
neck.
I waited for her to jump to her feet and scream out in defiance, “What have I done that your
precious King isn’t guilty of?”
Laying her head sideways on the block, she awaited her fate in silence.
The black-hooded killer appeared to us like a giant standing over her. A moment before, even
the handle of the axe and the blade had been taller than the living little queen. He drew back.
I heard the neck cracking then a thud as the girl’s head crashed to the platform floor. Steam
rose from the blood pouring in a warm pool from the lifeless body slumped behind the block.
Gene Hobbs had acquired the only known account of the gruesome event; one can imagine
that onlookers must have rushed to write on whatever they could find to recount the scene. The
metaphor of the rich over the poor and the machinery of torture in the room made me shudder. Reading the narrative, I felt sickened by the horror of the day, for lost innocence and the tyranny
of the time. What a waste of a beautiful young life; what a disgrace for England.

Excerpt
Run!
The loud hammering of Raine’s heart drowned out the single word bouncing around her mind—and the dogs barking at her back. Their angry growls faded the faster she ran. A little further. Just a little more, and she’d be home free.
Trees swooshed past her with every step she took away from the small isolated facility. She ignored the hospital gown swinging against her legs and the blood dripping down her arms from the torn IVs. Barefoot, the rocks bit into the soles of her feet. None of that mattered. She had to survive. Her life depended on getting as far away from that place as possible.
Inhaling the comforting scent of mud, trees, and the wild, she barely heard the barking over the breeze rustling through the willows with each step she put between them. At any other time, she’d have dissected her reaction to the forest. Not now. And she didn’t stop. No way was she getting captured again without a fight.
Air beat in and out of her lungs in tandem with the pounding of her feet on the rocky ground. Moonlight filtered through the branches overhead, highlighting her path. Her hair caught on the tree limbs, snatching at the loose strands. Some of the hanging vines prodded her arms and stabbed her sides. Her breath hitched, and she missed a step, lurching forward. Something inside her tightened. Her arms swayed and her core muscles flexed. Before she face planted, everything balanced out. She blinked. More scared now than she’d ever been in her life. Something controlled her body and it had reflexes far superior to a normal human.
Moisture gathered in her eyes, blurring her vision. She blinked it away. Panic would only get her caught.
Raine glanced at the moon. It had shifted twice—now in front of her, rather than behind. She stilled. The trees rustled with the wind. An owl hooted. But she still didn’t hear the annoying bay of the dogs.
Ragged breaths beat hard in her ears. A horn’s blare sounded in the distance. Fear and excitement gave her a burst of energy. Cars meant help. She urged her body faster.
Street lights peeked through the trees. Air panted out of her chest. A second car honked, speeding past another. She was almost there. So close. Thank god. She was going to make it.
Slowing down at the edge of a hill, she darted glances around the now quiet street. No people milled about or walked around. Nothing. A big store, one she recognized from the one time she’d gotten lost in the shadier side of town, sat a block to her right. The sudden quiet made sense now. Nothing good happened this far south of Tempting Eats. It was known as the dead side. The thought alone gave her chills. Women went missing…all the time. That had been enough to keep her uptown in suburbia-peace-nation.
She glanced around, searching for anyone who might be waiting for her or even any of the dangerous men her neighbors said roamed the streets, but there was nothing, not a single being. Her feet hit the pavement in a rush. Once across the street, she hid inside a dark alley. The stench of rotting food and piss coated the air with a thick blanket of disease and chaos. Her throat convulsed, and the acidic taste of bile hit the back of her tongue.
Retreating, she took several steps toward the end of the street to a small motel. Its yellow, neon Vacancy sign blinked on and off with a buzz. A man’s yell pushed her to slink into the dark. The sound came from the shadows in front of the motel.

EXCERPT

Moving Day

We arrived at level four meeting the movers at residence four seventy three just emerging from their cargo platform.  They were not to begin until we removed the official.  I opened the hard case and issued us our doses of High-Perc that would last for ten minutes.  As soon as we armored and armed we each inhaled slowing down time.  I crashed through the door first while simultaneously Lionel vaulted me stunning the official and his wife.  And his daughter.  And his grandmother.  And his male sex worker dressed in a thong made of barb wire.  Yea, that seemed to be everyone.

I looked up from the floor to see a man at least ten kilos bigger than me yelling at us as the fog from the High-Perc left.  "You dumb asses hit the wrong place.  The official and his wife live at four seventy four."  That registered and Lionel grabbed me up off the ground from my left shoulder as we rushed to use the last of the High-Perc to take out four seventy four.  I had just enough left to get me through the door and Lionel didn't show boat this time, one stun per target and only two.  Fuck me.

The big guy came in smiling "You guys are lucky.  That was the Chairman of the Community Ethics Committee.  He won't be pressing any charges.  As soon as the meat bags are gone we'll do our thing."  He kept smiling as he raised his wrist and tapped at the watch he wore.

Lionel ran out and backed the armored car to the front door.  I mag clamped both their hands and tossed them in the back.  I asked "Was that quick enough for you zipper head?"  Turning to the noise of Lionel slamming the back door I caught the giant's fist on the left side of my face and luckily the wall stopped my flight.  Somehow I got in the passenger seat and we were moving.

Lionel "What the fuck is your problem?  We got to work with these guys."

I didn't know what my problem was so I kept silent and he glared at me until he needed to maneuver the car through tight corridors.  The drop was in sub level fourteen and the only requirement was that it not be within two hundred meters of an elevator or stairs.  We reached the level and he found a large enough old construction staging area to get up to ten kilometers per hour, I triggered the hatch to flip up as he turned the car a one eighty and stopped abruptly.  The sound of stuff rolling out onto the concrete was all we heard.  I closed the hatch and remote released the mag-clamps as we pulled away.  Looking in the side mirror I saw the woman attempt to get up and move to her husband as the first Ravenarous launched from the shadows tearing a big enough chunk out of her chest that from fifty meters I could see the fountain of blood.

Excerpt:
He slithered his way across the casino floor and instantly his predacious gaze locked onto me. In a spontaneous act of avoidance, I burrowed into the crowd a bit deeper and tunneled my way through the unsuspecting human-shields and headed toward the mock-safety of the elevators. Not that I am afraid of him, far from it, I just cannot stand cocky bastards that think they are God's gift to the game. Especially when it's obvious that the only reason he chats me up so often is he is trying to learn my strategy and make a place for himself as poker royalty. Not on my watch, chump. But wait, I am not prey in this situation! I am never going to be someone's doormat or stepping stone ever again! Resolve hit me suddenly and I pivoted on my heel quickly, nearly slamming into his eye-level chest. Man, he was fast! And tall, geez. When did he get so tall? How had I never noticed that before? Ahh yes, always sitting at a poker table and only having to deal with his consuming gazes. This was a new level of freak-out.
"Is there something I can help you with, Rey?" I said as I craned my neck to see the tower of man before me, "Or were you on a mad dash to bilk someone of their life savings or rob some unsuspecting college girl of her panties and possible virtue tonight?"
"You wound me, truffle." He drawled with his gorgeous Latin accented "r".
Seriously? What is up with everyone and their nicknames for me lately?
"I decided at the last moment to switch to this hotel so I could be away from the action over at Caesar's and as I was registering I couldn’t miss your glorious essence calling to me from the crowd."
As if I was "calling" to him? Pssh. As if!
"And I just had to come speak to you and make sure you are doing well. Are you busy? You seemed in a hurry."
Rey could fool most people into thinking he was innocent or sweet or whatever façade he wanted to wear today but I know poker players and I know men and he was not fooling me one bit. He always stayed at Caesar's, which was one of the most important reasons I never did. Had he followed me? There would be no point in that. I have to stop being so paranoid.
"I was in a hurry yes, I.. uh.. have a date." It was sort of the truth. I was planning on going to my room for a nap before the tournament and was also praying that I would have a few moments with my Dream Guy, that always settled my nerves and gave me a little something extra to smile about.
A flash of something crossed Rey's face. Amazingly, I couldn't decipher if it was anger, confusion, or some other emotion. Even though I have been training to read people's faces, actions, words, and other characteristics for years now, he somehow managed to show an emotion I hadn't seen before. Weird. Well-played, sir. Game on.
